WBN launch in Trafalgar Square

Alan Bennett

Some of the selection

Jenny and I had the excitement of attending the grand launch of this ambitious project last night (Friday) in Trafalgar Square, where a line-up of famous authors (including Edna O’Brien, John

Margaret Atwood

le Carré, Philip Pullman, Sarah Waters, Alan Bennet, Margaret Atwood and many more), media  and political personalties (including

Boris Johnson

Boris Johnson) were hosted by Graham Norton. They all read either from their own books, or excerpts from their favourite books. It was an astonishing evening, shared with about 10,000 members of the public (including about 5000 givers like myself) and we finished off by giving and exchanging books with each other at random. It was a veritable “Book Fest”!

Jenny and I came away with 7 further books:
Half of a yellow sun: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Toast: Nigel Slater
Fingersmith: Sarah Waters
The Blind Assassin: Margaret Atwood
A fine balance: Rohinton Mistry
Case Histories: Kate Atkinson
The one from the other: Philip Kerr (not a WBN choice, but a

Edna O'Brien

freebie anyway)

When we have finished reading these, we will be delighted to give them away. So put in your bid now!
Tonight on BBC2, you may have noticed the entire evening is devoted to World Book Night from 7.30pm. So tune in and enjoy!
