Stuff happens………

The St Ives Sunday Club run today headed out over the fens to the Welney Wetland Centre, where we availed ourselves of their excellent cafe. Before we headed off in our various groups (4 in total), my attention was forcefully caught by the tiny St Ives bridge chapel

and the beautiful views across the meadows.2013-06-02 08.51.16

Despite a bright sunny morning, a club run is seldom complete without a few mishaps. Coming out of the Wetland Centre, one of our young riders found he had picked up a puncture while drinking his coffee (yes, it does happen….). 2013-06-02 11.13.18Lack of practice in mending punctures, along with the lack of a suitable replacement tube, meant we were delayed by half an hour…..everyone standing around making conversation while the poor lad did his best.2013-06-02 11.22.29

But while all this was happening, another member of the party had slipped on the stairs inside the cafe (probably because of his cycling cleats), started suffering breathing difficulties, and an ambulance had to be called out. That saw a premature end to his Sunday ride.

Then a few minutes from our final destination, one of the group (who will remain nameless!) had his chain come off the front chain rings and, instead of stopping to sort out the problem, he tried the usual roadie’s trick of pedalling the chain back on to the ring…….but it didn’t work, and his rear mech. got completely mangled around the rear cassette. Rear mechLuckily he was only a few minutes from home…….but there’s a lesson in that somewhere.
