MTB races, Hinchingbrooke Park
St Ives Cycling Club (Cambridgeshire) does much to encourage cycling across the spectrum of cycling interests. Though primarily a racing club, cyclists from a wide variety of other disciplines can also find a home. And one of those homes is in the world of mountain biking, where there is a strong enthusiastic group.
Each year, they put on a series of races on a Sunday in August, that cater for all ages and abilities. The location is Hinchingbrooke Country Park in Huntingdon, and this year they had the organizing support of Mud Sweat and Gears (MSG), and professional cycling event enterprise that has all the expertise of hosting such an occasion.
But to make this a success, there had to be a lot of ‘on-the-ground’ support from a local club, and St Ives CC came up trumps. Over 30 of the membership turned out variously to set up the course on Saturday, and to marshal on the Sunday. Nearly 300 competitors turned out, from 4 year olds to 70+ year olds, all racing (naturally) in their own categories.
The whole event turned the Country Park into a buzzing hive of enthusiasm, the clicking of gears accompanied by the crushing of gravel as the ‘nobblies’ ground the dirt over a challenging course.
