Burhan Sonmez, Turkish author.

I met Burhan in Istanbul, through an introduction by a former student of mine. Over a delightful meal near Taksim Square, I listened to a moving account of his near-death experience at the hands of police, of his exile in the UK and his lengthy recovery from his injuries…..it was a truly astonishing account, and one that gave me a new perspective on the politics of Turkey.
Last night, we had the privilege of listening to a more detailed account of his life, an essential ingredient to understanding the background to his novels. His latest, Sins and Innocents, the winner of the Turkish equivalent of the Man Booker prize, is well worth a read.
It goes without saying, his audience last night went home inspired. We are going to hear much more about this fine Turkish writer……and we were delighted to snatch 12 hours of his time here in Kimbolton.
